During my teenage years, I heard the word “community” so often it began to nauseate me. I had no idea what it meant, and was quite certain that an experience that would live up to the definitions I inferred from principals, teachers and other “authority figures” wasn’t actually possible.
Since that time, my studies, travel and work have centered around this question of: where Community exists, what it really means, feels and looks like and, how to create it.
What I have discovered is that Community (Interdependence) is essential to a meaningful life, that we can create it intentionally and that we cannot do that holy weaving work in isolation.
My explorations took me across the country - from my Washington state hometown to a midwestern college, and around the world - from women's bike shops in Havana to left-wing political activism in Panama City to cacao, autonomy and shamanism Oaxaca to Costa Rican spiritual villages and Turkish cities along the Black Sea.
Along the way, I paid close attention to the textures of "community" that I encountered, observing, experimenting, asking questions, sticking around a while.
Back in the United States, I started a farmers market in my suburban hometown, managed the City of Seattle’s community grant program, led meditation classes in San Quentin prison, directed transformational summer camps for refugee and immigrant teens, and taught women’s leadership courses around the country.
And now, it's time for me to launch this business, OVER THE MOON, UNDER THE SUN, and formally provide these services under one umbrella.
